Gap Project, Bridging Your Energy Gap

EPC Checker: How to Find Your Home’s Energy Rating

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rates how energy efficient your home is, from A (best) to G (worst). You can look yours up online in a couple of minutes. Your rating also decides whether you can get help with insulation and heating upgrades through a scheme like ECO4.

How to check your EPC rating

Opens GOV.UK in a new tab. Your postcode goes to GOV.UK, not to Gap Project.

What the EPC bands mean

A92 or moreMost efficient. Rare in older homes.
B81 to 91Very efficient.
C69 to 80Good. Above the level grants are aimed at.
D55 to 68Room to improve. Can qualify for ECO4 if you own your home.
E39 to 54Poor. Can qualify for ECO4 whether you own or rent.
F21 to 38Very poor. Can qualify for ECO4.
G1 to 20Least efficient. Can qualify for ECO4.

Why your EPC rating matters for grants

Under ECO4, homeowners need an EPC rating of D to G, and private tenants need E to G. Homes rated A, B or C are not eligible. A council referral through LA Flex also depends on your home’s rating. Your EPC is only part of the check, because household details such as benefits or income also count. Read our ECO4 guide for the full picture.

What if my home has no EPC, or it has expired?

Not every home has a certificate. An EPC is valid for 10 years, and you must have one when you sell or rent out a property or build a new one. If your home has no EPC, or yours has expired, you can get a new one. Tell us what you find and we will explain what is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I check my EPC rating?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, use the GOV.UK service called Find an energy certificate. In Scotland, use the Scottish EPC Register.

How long does an EPC last?

An EPC is valid for 10 years.

Does a low EPC rating mean I will get a grant?

Not on its own. Your EPC rating is one part of the check. Your benefits or income, and whether your home is owned or rented, also count.

Do I need an EPC to get a quote from Gap Project?

No. Press "Check if I qualify" and tell us about your home. We can help you work out the next step.

What is a good EPC rating?

A is the best and G is the worst. Most grants are aimed at homes rated D to G.
